Genesis 29:16-27

Imagine being in Jacob’s position and not getting what you bargained for. Imagine being in Leah’s position and knowing that you are not at all who or what your husband wanted. Both would be feeling the gamut of emotions: anger, exhaustion, fear, and rejection.

Perhaps no one illustrates this better than Job. In a very short period of time Job loses his wealth and all of his children die tragically on the same day. It is safe to say that life was not going how he had imagined.

Job shocks us all, however, when he proclaims, “Naked I came from my mother’s womb, and naked I will depart. The Lord gave and the Lord has taken away; may the name of the Lord be praised” (v. 21). Things did not get better for Job after he said this. They got worse. But he repeatedly declares the goodness and righteousness of God throughout his life.

God’s plans always differ from ours, but God’s plans are always good—even when they do not appear good. May we have the attitude of Job when life does not go the way we planned.
