Warning Signs

Matthew 24:1-14
Fire drills are a common occurrence throughout the school year. Students never know exactly when they will happen, but there are always warning signs. A firetruck is seen sitting outside of the window or a firefighter is spotted walking down the hallway. Word quickly spreads, and the rumor for the day becomes that there will be a fire drill. Even with the warning signs, however, no one knows exactly when the alarm will go off.
The disciples approached Jesus wanting to know about the end times. Instead of giving an exact date, Jesus listed some warning signs. The list includes wars, false prophets, persecutions, and earthquakes. The warning signs act as a precursor to Jesus’ second coming, but they still do not point to when it will happen.
Jesus warned the disciples against the false prophets who would deceive many. The student who has not yet seen the firetruck sitting in the parking lot could easily be convinced there would be no fire drill that day. The warning signs serve as a reminder that the end is coming, and “the one who stands firm to the end will be saved.”
