Romans 6:1-14
In Romans 5, Paul establishes the abundant grace available to all in Jesus Christ. Where sin once brought death, “God’s abundant provision of grace and of the gift of righteousness reign in life through the one man, Jesus Christ!” (v. 17). He concludes, “But where sin increased, grace increased all the more, so that, just as sin reigned in death, so also grace might reign through righteousness to bring eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord” (vv. 20b-21).
In chapter 6, Paul cautions that this super-abundant grace should not become an excuse for sin (vv. 1-2). The believer in Jesus Christ receives a new life conformed to the likeness of His death and resurrection. “We were therefore buried with him through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life” (v. 4).
This is more than a transfer of legal obligation; it is the total transformation of our lives in conformity with Christ’s.
