Late Night Conversation
October 16th, 2017
John 3:1-15
The conversation between Nicodemus and Jesus in John 3 took place in the darkness of night, a living demonstration of John 1: “The light shines in darkness and the darkness has not understood it” (v. 5). Night symbolized the misunderstanding many religious people had concerning Jesus. Nicodemus sincerely attempted to understand Jesus and His mission.
Jesus directed their conversation to the universal event of birth, then went beyond physical birth to the mystery of spiritual rebirth. This recalls the Genesis 2 creation story, where God breathed life into His creation, and God’s promise through the prophet Ezekiel, “I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit in you . . . And I will put my Spirit in you and move you to follow my decrees and be careful to keep my laws” (36:25, 27). The work of God’s Spirit brings new life: amazing, joyous, and surprising life!
