Build Up The Church
July 14th, 2017
1 Corinthians 14:10-26
In 1 Corinthians 14 Paul addresses the issue of speaking in tongues, or languages. As I read these verses, I am reminded of a great field camp meeting that we attended when we were missionaries in South Africa. Our field covered the northeast area of the country where several different ethnic groups resided. Our evangelist was an American and did not speak any of the languages of the people, so interpreters were needed. As the speaker approached the pulpit, he was flanked by two interpreters. The sermon was preached in English, but interpretation was given in two other languages. Periodically through the sermon, one interpreter would sit down and another would take his place. Each time this happened, the language changed. During the sermon, we heard the preaching in no less than five different languages, but it was all done in an orderly way and the whole crowd was built up in the faith.
This should be the way with our worship. As we sing and hear the Word proclaimed, and now more frequently in other languages, our purpose should be to build up the Body of Christ in the faith. Everything must be done to build up the Church.
