Your Hearts Were Hard

Matthew 19:1-12

I never expected to be affected by divorce. My parents were married almost 49 years before my mother’s death ended their life together. My in-laws were married for over 62 years before Mama died. Jodie and I have been married over forty years. Only three years into her marriage, however, my daughter said “I have a right to be happy, Daddy.” I knew what was coming.

We try to soften the reality by creating euphemisms. “Your hearts were hard” softens to “irreconcilable differences.” Adultery becomes an “affair.” Whether physical and/or sexual, adultery is also emotional, and spiritual. Often the children of Israel committed spiritual adultery, breaking their covenant with God!

Your life may have been affected by divorce or other consequences of the curse of Adam’s sin. You are not alone nor forgotten. There is grace to help; you may start afresh. Our daughter is now happily married again with two beautiful daughters of her own. Her faith has found a resting place!

I never thought my life would be touched by that horrible word, divorce, either. My husband and I were high school sweethearts. We’ve been together for 42 years, married for 36, when right before Christmas last year, he said I’m not happy, I want a divorce. My world came crashing down!! What would I do!! I haven’t worked in 20 years, I now have too many health issues to be able to work, that being the reason he told the pastor he wanted a divorce. It was so difficult the first couple of months. It’s still not easy, but I know God is leading the way. I’m putting my trust in Him, and I have a lot of people praying for me. Knowing that, helps a lot.
