Daniel 3:13-23
King Nebuchadnezzar was “furious with rage.” Who did these young men think they were? Everyone else had bowed down to his golden image. Everything had been going so well, from his point of view, and these idiots had ruined his moment. Perhaps they didn’t hear the clear instructions.

They would offer no excuse for their refusal to bow. They believed “the God we serve is able to deliver us,” but even if He didn’t, “we will not serve your gods or worship the image of gold you have set up” (Daniel 3:17-18).

You see, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego knew that you only bow to the one you obey, the one you are committed to serve. The world says, “Go ahead: bow. Curse the king under your breath if you must, but bow. This is not worth dying for.” That’s the oldest lie in the world; “You will not certainly die” (Genesis 3:4).

The truth is we do die, gradually perhaps but certainly, spiritually if not physically, when we bow to any other god than the true God of heaven and earth. That is worth risking everything for–even life itself.
