1 Kings 21:1-14

In Melville’s classic, Moby Dick, Captain Ahab was bent on killing the great white whale if it were the last thing he did. Captain Ahab wasn’t concerned about who or what got in his way, so long as his desired catch was achieved.

Much like Melville’s Ahab, King Ahab in 1 Kings 21 wanted something that was just out of his grasp. The target of King Ahab’s desire was Naboth’s vineyard. King Ahab differed from Captain Ahab only in that he didn’t have the killer instinct to take the vineyard. That’s where Queen Jezebel entered the picture. Jezebel’s wicked deceit knew no bounds, and her husband lacked the fortitude to withstand her deadly plan–even if he had wanted to.

Our society is rampant with the “eat or be eaten” mentality: The problem with this thinking is that it doesn’t line up with God’s way of thinking. “Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience.” (Col. 3:12)
