1 Corinthians 3:1-15

My parents used to buy me potted plants, believing they would outlive fresh cut flowers. After realizing how far I was from being a green thumb, they decided to change their strategy. If the world’s food supply or forests depended on my ability to make things grow, we would all be doomed.

Regardless of our knack–or lack–when it comes to gardening, we have all been called to plant and water seeds of the Gospel. Even though each of us is tasked with working in God’s field, our pride is put in check and peace restored when we remember God is the source of growth.

The Apostle Paul also uses another analogy in 1 Corinthians 3: God employs not only gardeners, but builders. Whether we plant gardens or construct buildings, if we do so apart from the solid foundation of Christ our efforts will not last.

Gardener or builder, we can rest knowing the results remain with our Master. As we build upon Christ’s foundation we are attentive to the quality of our efforts.
