Matthew 7:15-29

At my brother and sister-in-law’s wedding, I watched the best-man nervously swaying. I scanned the room for what was going wrong. It didn’t take long to realize God truly does have a sense of humor. Just as one of the groomsmen read “Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire.” (Matthew 7:19) a twig on one of the candle arrangements went up in flames.

Things turned out alright when the pastor turned firefighter. Yet, in Matthew 7 Jesus reminds us we have far more important things to be concerned with than a little fire hazard at a wedding. It is imperative for us to dispel what is false by knowing the truth. Jesus reminds us it’s not enough to simply know who He is; we are tasked with putting His words into obedient action. By doing what He says, we remain steady regardless of the storms that arise.

May we be among those who don’t fixate on fires, but rather focus on building a firm foundation on Christ.
