John 12:20-36

Jesus warned his followers that his physical presence would not continue. We read in John 12:20-36 about some Greeks who requested Philip to set up a meeting for them with Jesus. Was their request urgent? Did Philip think, “I have to hurry,” as he went to Andrew about the request? Did Philip and Andrew say, “This is urgent, we have to go immediately to Jesus”? Jesus certainly expressed urgency, “Believe in the light while you have the light, so that you may become children of light” (John 12:36). Whether others sensed time was limited or not, Jesus did. He said, “It was for this very reason I came to this hour,” and “Now is the time” (John 12:27, 31).

For God’s people to rely solely on passive “lifestyle evangelism” may leave some remaining in darkness. Others may not understand the urgency of receiving Christ. At times we must echo Jesus’ message and invite, urge, even compel others to, “Walk while you have the light, before the darkness overtakes you” (John 12:35).
