Mark 9:2-13

Peter, James, and John had a mountaintop experience unlike any other. Jesus was transfigured before them. His clothes became dazzling white. Elijah and Moses appeared and talked with Him. God spoke, “This is my Son, whom I love. Listen to Him!” Perhaps John was thinking of that experience when he wrote, “We have seen his glory” (John 1:14).

The awestruck disciples wanted to stay on the mountain. They did not yet understand God’s salvation plan. Before His birth, the angel announced that He would be called Jesus because He would save His people from their sins (Matthew 1:21). Jesus Himself said that He came “to give His life as a ransom for many” (Mark 10:45).

The problem of human sin was so great that only Jesus could reconcile us to God. He came to provide salvation for a lost world–for you and for me. There was only one way that this could be accomplished. Jesus would offer salvation not from a lofty mountaintop or a throne, but by His death on the cross.
