Psalm 51:1-19

The story in our family is that I was a terrible liar. Even when caught in the very act, denying was my automatic response. Not only did I lie about any infraction and every misdeed of my young life, I was obviously unconvincing. I was a terrible liar.

Confronted with his own sin, David confessed, appealing to the mercy and unfailing love of God. He recognized the futility of whitewashing or hiding his sinfulness. His plea was for cleansing to wash away the guilt and shame.

David also realized sin’s deep hold and influence over his life, penetrating to the core of his being. To experience true and lasting change, he needed a new control center. In requesting a pure heart, David used language reserved for the creative work of God. More than self-discipline or will power, David desired to be re-created–made new from the inside out, something only God can do.

“If we confess our sins, he [God] is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness” (1 John 1:9).
