Matthew 6:25-34

Is Matthew 6 holding forth an unrealistic ideal, a future reality? Or does it truly speak to us today regardless of our economic reality? Without minimizing the distress of those who live without basic necessities, or excusing the responsibility of those who have more than enough to care for others, consider the essential message of this passage.

Within this passage, worry is more than the concern I have when my daughter is out 30 minutes past curfew. It’s even more than wondering how to meet this month’s financial obligations. As important as these are, Jesus’ words point to a deeper level of worry: anxiety that contradicts trust in God.

Living under God’s reign calls us to redefine our needs and desires. To seek first His kingdom and righteousness is to align ourselves with the character and purposes of God in every area of life, fully trusting God’s care for us.
