Psalm 52:1-8

We live in a world that values wealth. Those who have wealth want to protect it and grow it; those without wealth long for it and work for it. There is a common idea that more money will make everything better.

The psalmist reminds us that there is one sure stronghold. The psalmist sings of the folly of seeking wealth. The psalmist prays to the only one who can make everything better. Of course, we are reminded time and again that following after the one true God is not always easy. The psalms, maybe more profoundly than any other part of scripture, point us to the painful lot we suffer as humans.

They don’t stay there, however. Even in the midst of despair, lament, complaint and fear, God is praised. There is hope that with God the wrong will be made right. With God the lowly will be lifted high. We who follow will be planted in a world that is always shifting, growing and flourishing in spite of adversity, bearing fruit for the kingdom. If we allow anything else to be our stronghold we will surely fall.
