Matthew 11:1-15
John must have been deeply troubled. He had been so sure in the beginning. He had heard the stories of his own birth and of the birth of his cousin, Jesus. He had seen an incredible response to his own message: “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven has come near.” He had baptized people by the dozens. He had even pointed his own disciples toward Jesus. He really believed!
But the people of Israel were rejecting Jesus. John seemed powerless to convince them that Jesus was indeed the Messiah.
Now John was in prison and his life was threatened. Was he missing something? Had he been wrong? Was there someone who would be able to turn the tide?
The response of Jesus to his troubled cousin was a simple one: trust the scriptures! What Isaiah had prophesied is happening. That is enough to know!
Then Jesus turned to the crowd with the same challenge. The prophets were right. The prophecies were coming true.
Sometimes we try so hard to analyze our way to faith. Ultimately, we must let the scriptures speak!
