Proverbs 22:1-16

Solomon gives us sage counsel: if a child starts well, he will end well. Who would not say amen to that?

We have been reflecting on the child Samuel, whose mother surrendered him to God at an early age. Now we consult the words of the wisest man who ever lived to learn more about how a child should be raised.

When parents are faithful in their responsibilities to their children, there is a fair expectation of a good result. There are many parents who raise their children with love, surround them with prayer, and expose them to only what is pure and holy. Yet in some cases, these children seem no different from those raised in unrighteousness. What do we say to parents when a child departs from the way?

It is helpful to remember that the proverbs of Solomon are merely that: proverbs, not promises. They are general observations about life, not guarantees. Still, though the outcome is not guaranteed, parents are responsible for raising their children in the ways of the Lord. Remain steadfast–teach your children about God.
