Luke 10:25-37
Keenan towered over me as he stood in my office. He was in trouble. His ROTC scholarship was jeopardized. He was being dismissed from the program because he had failed to pass my one credit course, not once but twice. He asked if there was anyway he could raise his grade. My response was that he had received the same opportunity as the other students. Case closed, as all the students and the faculty knew that I lived by the grading policy in the course syllabus.
I asked him to come back the next day. What a struggle with this dilemma. I had this young man’s future in my hands. He had not cheated, lied, or plagiarized. He just did not hand in the required assignments, an example of irresponsibility or laziness. On this second visit I said, “I will look at your assignments, and if they are acceptable, I will raise your grade one step only. You must give me a written explanation as to why you did not complete your assignments on time.”
With tears in my voice, I softly said, “Keenan, you have been given a great mercy, and someday you will have the chance to pass this on.”
