Genesis 16:1-16

Hagar is a Bible character who deserves our empathy and respect. As a servant girl, she had been sold and separated from her people. She was at Abraham and Sarah’s disposal. Even though they were in authority over Hagar and could do what they wished with her, they must have seemed like parents to her.

Hagar’s pregnancy by Abraham was simply the result of her obedience to her mistress. Sarah, the perpetrator, punished Hagar for her own foolishness and lack of faith. As Hagar fled into the desert, she must have felt rejected and betrayed.

Like Hagar, we can find great comfort in a God who sees us when we are persecuted or mistreated by family, those in authority, or even those in the body of believers. Misunderstandings often divide and create pain, leaving us feeling friendless and alone.

Yet, it is in those desert places in our lives when God comes to us. He calls us by name and speaks hope and healing into our hearts, minds, and circumstances. It is often in the desert when we come to see more nearly and dearly the One who always sees us clearly.
