Whatever He Tells You

John 2:1-12

Much has been written about Christ’s first recorded miracle—the changing of water into wine at the wedding at Cana. If one reads the account with fresh eyes, it seems natural to wonder what His mother knew about Him, and what she didn’t know.

In the approximately 30 years she had known Him, had Jesus’ mother ever seen Him turn water into wine? Were there earlier weddings in which the Lord enhanced the buffet? Unlikely.

The truth is: we don’t have any biblical evidence to suggest that Jesus had performed miracles before this point or that His mother had observed Him doing so. In fact, His comment that “‘My hour has not yet come’” in John 2:4b may specify that He hadn’t.

So why was Mary confident that Jesus could redeem this situation?

It may be as simple as the fact that, because she knew Him, she trusted Him. She may not have known what He would do or how He would do it. But the beauty of it is; she probably didn’t care. Perhaps she had simply learned that doing what He said was always the right decision no matter the circumstance. Maybe that’s the best definition of trust.

I really love this passage. There are great points like why was this the first miracle that Jesus performed? It is later referred to in Revelation about Jesus and the Bridegroom. What I found interesting today in this passage was the allegory of the container used was for Ceremonial washing. Jesus became this vessel himself. Also he is the catalyst for transformation to Spirit/ And when one drinks they will never thirst again. This is such an amazing and symbolic first miracle, custom crafted on so many levels.

A wedding is also a time for rejoicing, and celebrating. How wonderful that Jesus should begin and end his ministry in such a fashion.

I am grateful for a reminder of this celebration and invitation.

    I believe and receive..
