When God Speaks

Acts 10:9-29

In the account of Peter and Cornelius (Acts 10:9-29), I am impressed by the ways God chooses to speak. He speaks through prayer (vv. 2, 9). He communicates through visions during prayer (vv. 3ff., 11ff.). He also speaks through the voice of the Holy Spirit within (vv. 19-20), through the Spirit directed words of strangers (v. 22), and through a simple inner assurance (v. 28).

I am becoming increasingly aware of how often God takes the initiative in our conversations. Sometimes God simply gives a growing awareness of His will. Yet at other times He speaks decisively through a sermon, the scriptures, in the advice of a friend, or in the lyric of a song. I have known God to yell, awakening me in the dark of night so He could speak with my undivided attention. Yet, I have heard Him speak in a whisper or a gentle breeze.

Notice that both Peter and Cornelius lived in a place where they could hear God, and they were quick to obey.

  • Do you take time to listen to God?
  • When God spoke to you recently, were you quick to obey?
  • What is God saying to you now?
