Jesus Satisfies the Thirsty Soul
February 17th, 2014
John 4:1-15
It was 114 degrees Fahrenheit on a Sunday afternoon and Carla was in a boat crossing over the Sea of Galilee. She had been warned that she would need to have water with her the entire time because dehydration could come quickly and suddenly. While baking on that boat she understood why the disciples would often wait and fish at night or hide in the shade in the middle of the day. It could easily have been in this type of heat that Jesus stopped to rest and ask for a drink from the woman at the well in Samaria. She was obviously an outcast because no one in their right mind would go to draw water in the middle of the day, unless they had no other choice. When Jesus told her he had water that would quench her thirst forever, she was certainly excited. It would solve the problem of coming to the well day after day. But Jesus was talking about a new kind of water, the outpouring of the Holy Spirit who would come and quench the dryness of our spiritual lives. It is the Spirit who quenches our daily thirst for Him!
