Peace Amid Turmoil
January 19th, 2014
Psalm 46:1-11
Ours, like that of the psalmist, is a world in turmoil. We hear reports of devastating tornadoes, destructive tsunamis, deadly earthquakes, as well as climate change. Sometimes it seems that our planet is bent on self-destruction.
Human beings reflect the upheavals in nature by vicious behavior and civil unrest while politicians smear the character of their opponents with ever increasing ferociousness. Rogue nations persistently pursue means of annihilating other nations so that “peace on earth” gives every evidence of being an ever receding dream, highly unlikely of ever being realized.
It is easy to despair for the future if we fail to recognize that God is still God. He is still on the throne of the universe “sustaining all things by his powerful word” (Heb. 1:3). And in His time He will be recognized and exalted in the final consummation. So, as Christians we live in hope and expectation of the time when every knee will bow, and every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord.
