Psalm 94:1-13

“This is going to hurt me more than it hurts you.” These famous and familiar words are usually uttered by a father (or mother) just prior to exacting some form of discipline on their children. In my case, it was an “old-fashioned” spanking. I always questioned the logic of such a statement, until I became a parent. It was then that I realized my own difficulty in fulfilling my role as disciplinarian to my kids.

We are in the week traditionally set aside for gift giving. Here the Psalmist affirms that discipline is a gift of God. The discipline of God is a precious blessing because it is born out of love and concern. He desires to protect us and to keep us in peace. It is a gift because rebellion in any form has the potential to separate us from Him, and He will do anything He needs to do to keep us in relationship to Him. It is a gift, because it reveals a certain communion with Him.
