Luke 16:1-15

You can fool some of the people all of the time and all of the people some of the time, but you can’t fool all of the people all of the time, or so the saying attributed to Abraham Lincoln goes. Unfortunately, over the last several decades research shows there has been a significant decline in the United States in trust in Christian leaders. Too many who claim the name of Christ misused funds entrusted to them for the work of the church. We expected them to demonstrate integrity, but they proved themselves unworthy of trust.

The people who have most influenced and helped me in my Christian journey were not without flaws in judgment and action. I don’t know any perfect people. However, the ones who are really convincing to me have been, and are, people that I believe tell me the truth.

You probably can’t fool all of the people as often as in earlier days, and the proportion who can be fooled all of the time has probably decreased significantly. This makes it even more important than those of us who tell the good news of the gospel be known as trustworthy.
