I’ve Got Your Back

Matthew 10:16-31
My eyes were virtually glued to the TV watching the 2012 Olympics. The United States men’s gymnastics team was competing and they were clearly very nervous. In the background I heard voices shouting “We’ve got your back.” Nevertheless, several men faltered along the way and Olympic gold was not for this team.
In Matthew 10:16, we listen to Jesus saying, “I am sending you out like sheep among wolves.” This was a dramatically dangerous undertaking for which the disciples were clearly inadequate. In the vernacular of today Jesus could be saying, “I’ve got your back.”
And He does! As we go out into the harvest we need to be wise in avoiding danger, proving ourselves to be innocent and pure in the midst of the unwholesome world in which we live. Yes, as we are witnesses for Jesus Christ, we can hear Him say, “I’ve got your back.” We need to listen to Him with confidence, as we go through our spiritual “gymnastics,” reading the Word of God, constantly seeking Him in prayer, and listening carefully to the indwelling of the Holy Spirit!

“Gymnastics is a sport involving the performance of exercises requiring physical strength, flexibility, power, agility, coordination, grace and balance” (pl.wikipedia.org)
In lieu of physical strength, spiritual gymnastics would also utilize faith in the flexibility and power of love, agility in following the Holy Spirit, coordination of our life with Jesus’ and the grace & balance Jesus adds to our life..
