Nahum 1:1-15

“God is serious business. He won’t be trifled with,” writes Eugene H. Peterson in The Message. In today’s scripture, Nahum envisions what lies in store for the people of Nineveh if they do not change their ways. While trouble of any kind is difficult, to act in a way that provokes God’s wrath is asking for trouble with a capital T.

During recent years several in our family have dealt with serious trouble–job loss, illness, divorce, financial difficulties, and more. Disobedience to God was not a factor. It seemed that Eliphaz had it right when he said to his friend Job, “Yet man is born to trouble as surely as sparks fly upward” (Job 5:7).

As I searched my Bible and prayed for each troubled heart and home, God’s Word confirmed what I already knew: The promises of God never change. While it is highly unlikely that He will zap away problems with a snap of His fingers, He promises to walk with us through trouble. I could share this promise and remind each one that God’s comforting arms are always open to those whose trust lies in Him.
