Christ’s Prayer, Our Pattern

Luke 11:1-13

The prayer Jesus taught His disciples is the model for all Christian prayer. It is a prayer of undeniable intimacy, “Father.” It is a prayer on holy longing, “hallowed be your name.” It is a prayer of certain hope, “your kingdom come.” It is a prayer of humble dependence, “Give us each day our daily bread.” It is a prayer of unpretentious confession and grateful obligation, “Forgive us our sins, for we also forgive everyone who sins against us.” Finally it is a prayer of confident trust, “And lead us not into temptation.”

A friend may be reluctant to help at an inconvenient hour, but a loving father hears the cry of his child and gives them his best. God will be there: He is the answer to our asking, He is the goal of our search, He is the gracious host standing beside the open door. Above all, He will give His abiding presence, His Holy Spirit, to those who ask Him.
