Matthew 3:1-17

Three times during Jesus’ ministry God spoke audibly: at His baptism, at the Transfiguration (17:5), and shortly before the Crucifixion (John 12:28-29). On each occasion the Father affirms His Son.

Jesus is uniquely God’s Son. He is “the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth” (John 1:14). Although preeminent, Jesus is “the firstborn among many brothers and sisters” (Rom. 8:29). Through faith in Him we become children of God.

Jesus is the focus of the Father’s love (John 3:16). Jesus prayed to the Father that “the love you have for me may be in them and that I myself may be in them” (John 17:26).

The Father was well pleased with the Son. Jesus embodies the words, “Here I am, I have come–it is written about me in the scroll. I desire to do your will, my God” (Ps. 40:7-8; Heb. 10:7). God’s pleasure abides with the one who does His will. Jesus is the supreme example, yet God equips us to do His will, working “in us what is pleasing to him, through Jesus Christ” (Heb. 13:20-21).
