Amos 5:1-17

Amos, chapter 5, is another hard passage. The people of Israel had been leading indulgent lives for some time. God sought to capture their attention by sending increasingly dire circumstances upon them (see chap. 4).

In particular, the Lord found unacceptable how the people were treating the less fortunate. The wealthy were enriching themselves at the expense of the common people. They were placing burdensome taxes on the workers, making it impossible for them to care for their families, causing the poor to lose their lands. They were using their ill-gotten gain to set themselves up in style, building palatial homes for themselves and providing themselves with every luxury.

“Seek me and live” (5:4). God loves us, and He wants the best for us. The covenant He set up with His people was not just a set of rules and regulations required to make Him feel in control. The covenant was a pact between the God of the universe to love, protect, and cherish His people. Our only task is to love Him back.
