Colossians 4:2-9

When an advertisement appears that is violent, or what my kids would call “gross,” I find myself forming a negative view of the product advertised. Paul realizes this could happen if the gospel is presented in a way that seems harsh and judgmental to the hearers. Earlier he assured the believers at Colossae of his continual prayer that God would fill them “with the knowledge of his will through all the wisdom and understanding . . . so that you may live a life worthy of the Lord and please him in every way: bearing fruit in every good work” (1:9-10). The good work Paul emphasizes includes our witness to non-Christians. Our lives should honor Christ’s name and places no hindrances in the way of those who need Him. Our speech should habitually manifest grace and thanksgiving, telling what Christ has done, is doing, and will do in our lives.

Opportunities for wise witnessing will come. Paul admonishes us to “make the most of every opportunity.” Like an eager shopper at a bargain sale snatching… “Lord, help us to be alert to opportunities to witness for You.”
