Let’s Not Pretend

Psalm 19:1-14

If those who know us well were being completely honest, what might they say about us? Perhaps they’d say we are kind, loving, and generous. Would someone say that though we pray we seem to worry a lot, rather than trusting God? Someone might point out that we are quick to find fault, get our feelings hurt easily, or always want to be first.

We would be horrified. Maybe we would say, quite sincerely, “I didn’t realize I was like that.” It’s often easier to see someone else’s faults than our own. We may be like children, dressing up, pretending to be something we’re not. We may be aware of attitudes or failures we hope nobody else will notice.

Whatever is hidden from us or those around us, nothing is hidden from God. We can’t play “let’s pretend” with him. When we come to him with no pretense, God shines his word into our hearts, revealing our need. He doesn’t only diagnose our problem, but as we submit to him, he treats our condition. By his grace, we are forgiven and free.
