2 Corinthians 11:1-15

The Corinthian Christians have been and are surrounded by grace. Yet they seem to have forgotten it. Like Eve listening to the serpent, the Corinthians are listening to false teachers, offering everything self wants and nothing self needs. Like Adam and Eve they are perilously close to yielding and in danger of finding themselves naked and separated from God.

As a result, Paul weeps. Not only does he weep, he calls the Corinthians back to Christ their husband. He calls the Corinthians back to the Jesus he is devoted to, the Holy Spirit they too have received, and the gospel he preaches. He warns of the destruction the false teachers face. He pleads with the Corinthians to return and not suffer the same destruction.

When reading 2 Corinthians, chapter 11, I think of a tornado warning that came over the intercom when I was student teaching. Mercifully, it went the other way. Paul is warning the Corinthians, and us, that, like a tornado, false teaching can sweep us away. We, like the Corinthians, have a shelter in grace, the grace incarnate in Jesus.
