1 John 3:1-10

How limited we are in thinking that childhood pertains only to a certain age bracket. John reminds us that we are all children–children of God! This is true right now, this very moment, whether we are 6 or 60. To grasp and understand this is to begin to have a childlike faith in our heavenly Father.

To begin to see things in a heavenly perspective, instead of an earthly one, we must identify ourselves with this heavenly Father. The promise is for us that we will be like him! Just like a little boy emulates his earthly father, walking like him, talking like him, taking on his mannerisms, so we should become like our heavenly Father: acting and living in love, compassion, faithfulness, gentleness, kindness, etc.

John reminds us that the cost of all this is giving up our sin, our selfish will. When we do, we find wholeness leading to holiness as we are forgiven and filled with the power of the Holy Spirit. Living in us, he helps us, guiding and teaching us what it is to live a holy life in relationship with a holy God.

As in the real world, not all children of God mature at the same rate in the same time frame. As many in the know would inform us, some never mature. For example, there are many special adults in this world that have a mind of 8 yr. old. For reasons not fully understood, their bodies mature, but their brains don’t. The same can be said regarding our spiritual lives.

Just as there are babes in Christ, there are toddlers, and all the other ages up. Seeds sown for Christ need good soil (the heart), water (the Holy Spirit) & the right light to grow.

Unfortunately for the world, we control the amount of light we emit. It would sure be wonderful for “the world” if we wore signs regarding our spiritual age. That Christian clothing is so very important (Colossians 3:12-14).
