Avoiding Captivating Enticements

James 1:9-18

Not everything we do wrong is Satan’s fault. No wonder we are blameworthy.

I have often heard it said, “Whatever gets your attention gets you.” Some things are amazingly captivating. They grab our attention, entice our interest, and soon our gaze is riveted. In those moments we lose perspective, our sense of time and discernment.

James cautions about allowing our own evil desires to be enticed. Not all desire or the things that captivate us are evil. Isn’t it amazing how easily we are drawn aside and enticed to satisfy our legitimate appetites in illegitimate ways? With just a few clicks of a computer mouse one can find things on the Internet that can entice us away from the things that honor God.

I rejoice in the knowledge that desire can be sanctified by submitting it to the lordship of Jesus Christ. A heart that delights in pleasing him finds a freedom from the damage that the enticement by evil desire can bring about.
