Job 1:1-5
I cherish my father’s Bible given to him by my grandmother on his 18th birthday. I remember finding this Bible in the glove box of Dad’s work truck. It was Dad’s regular custom to read his Bible every morning before work, marking with hash marks where he stopped reading. Dad left for work each morning almost before daybreak, returning around dusk. An independent, non-union steel fabricator, Dad diligently provided for his family just as did Job.
Blameless and upright, Job’s custom included sacrifices of burnt offerings “just in case” his children may “have sinned and cursed God in their hearts” (v. 5b).
What are your regular customs? Spending time with family and friends; worship and praise; reading and meditating on the word of God? Someone has written “Sow a thought, reap a deed; Sow a deed, reap a habit; Sow a habit, reap a character; Sow a character, reap a destiny.”
Like my dad and Job, may you sow thoughts, deeds, and habits that result in becoming one who is blameless and upright, who fears God and shuns evil!
