1 Samuel 16:1-13

Women can’t play classical music as well as men. That was the widely-held belief until judges started putting screens between themselves and those auditioning for orchestras. Once they began basing their decision on ability instead of outward appearance, the number of women in the top orchestras increased five-fold.

Samuel went to Jesse’s house to anoint Israel’s next king. When the oldest son Eliab entered the room, Samuel immediately thought, “This is the one. He’s leader material!” But the Holy Spirit whispered, “Man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart” (v. 7b). Once Samuel quit relying on what he could see and started listening to the Spirit’s inner prompting, God pointed him to the most unlikely candidate of all: the shepherd-boy David.

Do you want to be used by God? Cultivate a heart that longs to please him. That’s just the person he’s looking for.
