1 Samuel 12:1-15

It’s a good thing God doesn’t always answer our prayers.

For many years, Samuel had been a faithful spiritual leader for the Israelites, but he was growing old and none of his sons were worthy successors; the people began to clamor for a king like the other nations had. Samuel warned, “You don’t realize what you’re asking for. In exchange for his leadership, a king will require your servitude. A ruler can quickly become an oppressor.” But the people persisted in their request. God finally told Samuel to give them what they wanted. Little did they realize how this leader they had begged for would become a source of great national pain.

God invites us to pray our deepest desires to him. But it isn’t always in our best interest for the Lord to give us what we ask. As a loving Father, he knows the effect on our lives if he grants our every request. So, as wise children we should pray, “Lord, this is what we want. Please give us what we need.”
