Be Prepared!

RG AUDIO 041212Matthew 25:1-13
I am one of those people who wait until the last minute to fill the gas tank. I think I can go just a few more miles before stopping. I have not run out of gas yet, but there have been moments when I was nervous it would happen. I keep hoping there will be a gas station in a mile and then I see a sign that the next stop was 10 miles away!
In the story that Jesus told in Matthew 25, he says that half the virgins were unprepared for a long wait for the bridegroom. They are defined as foolish. They are immature and easily distracted. The other virgins are called wise. The wise are practical. They anticipate delay and are prepared. Jesus wants us to be like the wise virgins. He tells his hearers to be alert…A long term commitment to watching. That requires the Holy Spirit’s constant indwelling presence. On our own, we are foolish. Distracted by our own desires and whims. With the Spirit’s help we can be on our guard, so that we are ready when Jesus returns.
