“Listen up!” That was one of my dad’s favorite phrases. He used it to get our attention. When he said that, I couldn’t ignore the instructions that came next.
The setting for Jesus’ parable was in the Temple in Jerusalem. This was where he was confronted by the Pharisees and Jewish religious leaders. He commanded them to listen! It wasn’t a suggestion. Jesus then told them a story with a strong lesson. It is a story of violence and death. Jesus meant business. The Jewish leaders had rejected him. They refused to recognize who he was. This story was a warning to them. Their rejection, however, would not prevent the fulfillment of his mission and the plan of salvation. The hard part was for them. They would miss out on the benefit of being part of his plan.
Don’t reject the truth about Jesus. His offer of salvation is for everyone. It is our choice whether we accept it or walk away. We are also called to bear fruit. To share this message of salvation.
