Doing Time

December 19th, 2011

RG AUDIO 121911James 5:7-20

Do you imagine it will ever be easy to wait? Certainly we have ample opportunities to practice our “waiting game” while navigating the boredom and frustration of waiting rooms, waiting lines, and waiting lists. Nevertheless, finding truly responsible ways of “doing time” while we wait on the divine answers and help we so desperately need might prove to be the supreme challenge of a lifetime.

This is not a new problem, and James acknowledges our difficulty. He offers counsel, holding up for consideration the imagery of a long-suffering farmer whom the pace of change will be agricultural and seasonal. James pictures a judge standing at the door, finally ready and eager to enter the courtroom of human history to render a decisive verdict for justice and truth. Both images make the same point for the Advent season: God has now come near, making this a perfect time for us to act in correlation with the Lord’s gracious reign!
