A Delightful Inheritance

“We’re spending our kid’s inheritance” read the bumper sticker on the back of a very expensive motor home. The owner was probably just making a joke for the vehicles that would follow him. On the other hand he may have decided that rather than having the kids fight over the inheritance he would not leave them anything to fight over.

Our heavenly Father is very serious concerning the inheritance he has for his children. Joshua and Caleb were trying to get the Israelites excited about their inheritance–“the Promised Land.” The children of Israel were pre-occupied with their grumbling and complaining and forced God to withdraw his offer to all the fighting men over 20 years of age (Num. 14:22-23).

Their inheritance was transferred to their children instead. They could not receive their inheritance because of their lack of faith. Peter reminds of us of how secure our inheritance is if we remain faithful. “In his great mercy he has given us new birth . . . through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, and into an inheritance that can never perish, spoil or fade–kept in heaven for you” (1 Pet. 1:3b-4).
