Love In The Thoroghfare
August 24th, 2011
Romans 14:1-12
While visiting Greece, we ventured high up into the mountains to view a 15th-century monastery that still hosts a monastic community. We held our breath as we journeyed to the top of a sandstone pinnacle. In this place hermits once scaled the heights to be alone with God. They longed to be free from the pressures of the world so they could really know God.
Few are called to such a life; rather, most of us learn to love God best in the midst of life’s bustle among people with numerous points of view. Scripture teaches that we serve God best by serving one another.
Love–not only for God–but for each other, is the defining principle of Christianity. We are taught to “Live in peace with each other. And we urge you, brothers… encourage the timid, help the weak, be patient with everyone. Make sure that nobody pays back wrong for wrong, but always try to be kind to each other and to everyone else” (1 Thess. 5:13b-15, TNIV).
