I seem to have a hiccup problem with Romans chapter 12. Scriptural hiccups indicate a temptation to ignore about every other phrase or perhaps verse. There may be a readiness to pursue, “be joyful in hope,” a desire to skip “patience in affliction” and a commitment to be “faithful in prayer.”
It is interesting what we skip when reading scripture. In an honest second read we can discover issues God desires to confront in our lives. One friend talked about a parishioner who often stood to lead the congregation in the Lord’s Prayer. The only problem was he always skipped the line; “Forgive us our trespasses as we forgive . . .” Unfortunately this was not just a phrase but an action dropped in this person’s life. I am challenged by my own hiccupping tendencies to read this passage slowly with a prayer that God would speak to all things in my life and that I would listen.
