Luke 6:37-42
I love the television commercial where the mother is making peanut butter sandwiches for her children and finds only one slice of bread left. She lets one child cut the slice in two, but allows the second child to choose first. What a lesson for both children!
This is the golden rule in a nutshell. If you want to be forgiven, then forgive others. God says we will be rewarded extravagantly in the same way we reward other people.
It is often said that the virtue of the golden rule is found in all the major religions of the world. But if you read the texts of those religions, you will discover that they often approach the idea from a negative point of view: Do not do what you do not want done to you. Christian conduct is not about refraining from doing bad things to avoid what consequences may come, but rather in actively doing the right things anyway.
