He Called Her Daughter
March 27th, 2011
Luke 8:40-56
The poor woman had an urgent need for a hysterectomy. Being crushed by the mob, she approached from behind. Jesus asked the most ludicrous question. “Who touched me” (v. 45a)? Ridiculous, that is, unless you are Jesus. The mystery is a revelation of his nature, both fully human and yet divine. Her bleeding stopped even before Jesus asked his question.
It was her faith put into desperate action. When she was desperate enough to overcome fear and ridicule, her faith activated and accomplished the impossible! He recognized her faith when power left him and rushed through her bleeding body.
“Daughter, your faith has healed you.” He called her “daughter.” Here was this anemic untouchable woman with stained and smelly clothes. He honored her with a relational name. There they stood eye to eye, and he called her “daughter”!
