Luke 16:1-15

Luke 16 is one of those parables that puts God in bad light. Jesus seems to be commending a dishonest manager. The guy hears that he is about to be fired, so he goes out and makes deals all over the community, reducing the bills of his master’s vendors in hopes of gaining their favor when he’s standing in the unemployment line. By cheating his master, he secures a potential future for himself.

God is interested in what we do with what we have in our hands. Recognizing what is coming, this manager acts accordingly. After the parable, Jesus talks about being faithful with what we have. Given the nature of the kingdom to come, maybe we are expected to do the unthinkable, the unorthodox, the unimaginable. Maybe we are meant to be creative in the use of our resources. God values kingdom ingenuity. And we’ll always be explaining that inexplicable God.

Pretty cool message – Is there any particular rules regarding this idea I have for my church: We have a large property and I had a vision of planting a garden perhaps engaging the youth of the church in the project, ultimately this garden would be organic and contain all edible plants and when they are ready for harvesting offering the “fruits of the field” to our needy in the community. We have a “Food Pantry” and this could be an extension of that area – Thank You Joyce Swanson
