You Never Know Where…

Luke 4:1-13
With almost every action, Luke writes that Jesus, filled with the Holy Spirit, went/spoke/healed/taught. It all began with the conception announcement to Mary: “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you” (Luke 1:35). The gospel ends with the promise to the disciples of a gift of the Father, the Holy Spirit.
It is not surprising then that the temptations of Jesus occur under the filling of the Spirit. Jesus is led by the Spirit to an abandoned, lifeless, death zone called desert. No wonder that it becomes the home of the devil himself when he wishes to distract Jesus from the work of the Father with a self-centered tantalizing offer. The same devil draws us to desert places and promises us empty pursuits. And the same Holy Spirit frequents our deserts and empowers us to say a firm no.
