Haggai 1:1-11

“Once upon a time” is a good way to start fairy tales. However when the word of the Lord comes, it comes to real people, with real names, in real time (see Hag. 1:1). Our days are not so different from Haggai’s. We have had times when we “have planted much, but have harvested little” (Hag. 1:6). Maybe we have put nice triple-pane windows in our homes while plaster is falling off the walls of the church. Haggai was not emphasizing buildings; he was calling on us to honor God and trust His promises.

John has a tremendous memory for dates. He could tell you when he gave his heart to the Lord, and when he was called to preach. He could tell you when he hopped a freight train with only 13 cents in his pocket to go to college and study for the ministry. He could tell how time and again the Lord was faithful to His promises. Have you experienced the Lord’s faithfulness in your own life? Trust in His promises today.
