The (Un)Secret of Life
October 9th, 2010
Proverbs 3:13-26
“All I really need to know I learned in kindergarten,” mused Robert Fulghum. In our passage, the Teacher warns, “Dear friend, guard Clear Thinking and Common Sense with your life”. Could it be that the secret to life is not so secret? Could it be that the great wisdom of the Almighty God, which forms the foundations of the universe, plays out in the little, obvious choices of life?
• Don’t spend it if you don’t have it.
• Share.
• Save for a rainy day.
• Celebrate the good stuff.
• Persevere through the bad stuff.
• Rest.
• Play often.
• Love deeply.
Could the wisdom of God, which is more precious than rubies, be as simple as this? Jesus seemed to think so: (1) love God, (2) love people. “All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments”. Seek the wisdom of God above all else, “and he will give you everything you need”. Maybe we all need to go back to that kindergarten Sunday School class and relearn the basic ways of God.
